Donaldson Center, Site Improvements, Greenville, SC

A new aircraft maintenance hanger was designed in a remote area of the Donaldson Center.  To accommodate the planned construction of a new state-of-the-art facility at such a great distance from existing infrastructure, the design team had to consider limited grade tolerances while maintaining a tight construction budget.  Chandler Construction Services, Inc. successfully and safely completed the proposed improvements with minimal change orders and well within design limitations.

More than 6,000-LF of temporary and permanent industrial-gauge fencing with barbed wire had to be installed to secure the area prior to construction.  After the area was secured, demolition of a 50-year old, abandoned concrete and asphalt runway began.

Material was removed and transported to an onsite disposal and reclamation facility to provide access for subsequent excavation and installation of underground utilities.

The scope of work included construction of a new storm drainage collection and retention system, 24-inch diameter fire protection line and 8-inch diameter gravity sewer.  In addition, domestic water was installed to service the new hanger and an extensive network of underground conduit was constructed to accommodate future telecommunication and electrical needs.

Following testing and certification of fire protection, domestic water and sanitary sewer, disturbed areas were restored with aircraft-rated concrete surfacing.  Fine grading, asphalt parking, pavement markings, and grassing were completed during the final phases of the project.
